How to Run a Virus Scan with Windows Defender

Windows Defender is an antivirus software designed to protect your computer from viruses, malware, and spyware. It allows you to monitor your device's security and take necessary actions if your device is at risk. Follow the instructions below to run a scan on your device using Windows Defender.

Steps to Run a Quick Scan using Windows Defender

  1. Click on the arrow on the lower right hand side of your desktop. Click on the blue shield application, which is labeled as Windows Security.

     

  2. Click on Virus & threat protection

     

  3. Select the Quick scan button.

     

  4. Windows Defender will begin scanning your device.

     

  5. Once complete, a report of the scan will be displayed.

 

Steps to Run a Full Scan using Windows Defender

If you suspect that a virus or another malware has infected your computer, a full scan may be necessary to check your entire system for viruses.

NOTE: A full scan can take hours to finish.

  1. Click on the arrow on the lower right hand side of your desktop. Click on the shield icon, which is labeled as Windows Security.

     
  2. Click on Virus & threat protection

     
  3. Select Scan options.

     
  4. Click on Full scan, then press the Scan now button.

     
  5. Windows Defender will begin scanning your device.

     
  6. Once complete, a report of the scan will be displayed.
