DegreeWorks “What-If” Feature

The DegreeWorks “What-If” Feature allows you to view a student’s DegreeWorks record under hypothetical conditions. It allows you to see what a student’s record will look like if they are in a certain program or taking certain courses.

For this example, let’s look at a Sophomore Political Science major. Here are a few screenshots showing what their DegreeWorks currently looks like.

In these screenshots, we can see a typical view of a student’s DegreeWorks. We can see the courses they have taken, the courses that they are taking and the courses that they still need to complete. This information is based off of the student’s current record and current major. Therefore, the courses that they still need to take and the courses they have taken are shown in relation to the Political Science major. DegreeWorks is showing us what courses count towards their university requirements as well as their Political Science requirements.

The What-If function will allow us to look at a student’s record under other circumstances.

As you can see in the screenshot, there are several different fields that we have the option of filling in. Please note that you do not need to fill in all the fields. This means we can see what the student’s major would look like if they were in a different major or if they were registered for different courses. By default, the boxes to show courses that the student has taken/is taking are checked off.

For example, we can see in one of the above screenshots that this student still needs to take an ILO 9 course. If we plug one of those ILO 9 requirements into the What-If feature, we can see their record reflect the planned course.

Once you add the information you would like to look at, click “Process.” Please see the below screenshots for what a student’s DegreeWorks will look like while using What-If.”

And compare it to what it used to look like.

This will show what the student’s record will look like if they are planning to take ARTH 150 as their ILO
9. If a student is unsure that a course will fulfill their requirement, use the What-If function to confirm.

The What-If function can also be used to look at different majors. If this PoliSci student was interested in switching to COM, for example, we could see how their record would look if they were a COM major. We could see which of the courses they’ve taken/are taking count towards a COM Degree and we could see what courses they would need to take as well.
