What is Microsoft 365 Copilot?

Microsoft 365 Copilot is an artificial intelligence (AI) chat tool for the web that can provide insights, draft and create new content based on parameters you provide, and analyze data.

  • Copilot (Basic) is available for all faculty, staff, and students as part of the Microsoft Campus Agreement and provides standard access.
  • Copilot (Premium) is an add-on license that requires an annual subscription. Users who wish to purchase a Premium license with a campus budget may do so using the Software Purchase Request Form.

Sensitive University data should never be entered into generative AI tools, including Copilot. Review the guidelines for Sensitive Data Storage and Transmission in Microsoft 365 Applications prior to using this tool.

Get Started with Copilot Chat

Copilot (Basic)

Students, faculty, and staff can find Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat (Basic):

Beginning April 15, 2026 Microsoft discontinued access to Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for users with the Copilot (Basic) license. Users who wish to use the Copilot in-app premium features may purchase an annual Copilot (Premium) license using the Software Purchase Request Form.

  • available using all of the Basic license options listed above
  • M365 apps- Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote

How to Log In

  1. Select the Sign In button at the upper right corner of the page
  2. Select the option for "Sign in with a work or school account".
  3. Enter your La Salle LUNA credentials
  4. Verify you are using the secured version of Copilot by checking for the green "Protected" icon in the upper-right corner.

Copilot is available through all web browsers, but the preferred experience is to utilize the Microsoft Edge browser. It is also available as a stand-alone app for your Windows, iOS, and Android devices. 

Commercial Data Protection

Copilot is designed to offer a higher level of data protection for schools that use Microsoft's products. Encrypted prompts and responses are not stored or used for training the underlying large language models. Sessions and data are purged after use.
