About
Email headers contain the envelope information that shows where emails originated from and how they were routed to reach your inbox. Headers provide much more reliable information than the From address when investigating suspicious emails. These instructions provide step-by-step directions for forwarding email headers for Outlook Web Access and Outlook client.
Forwarding Headers from Outlook Web
- To forward the email and its headers, click the three dots to open More actions.

- Select “View,” then select “View message details.”

- Hold down the Ctrl key and press the letter A to select the full text of the header. Outlook Web Access will highlight the header and the email itself.

Outlook Web Access will open the Message details window. The text in the window is the email header.

- Then, hold down the Ctrl key and press the letter C to copy the header to the Clipboard. Click “Close” to close the Message details window.
- Select “Forward” with the arrow pointing to the right.

- In the address bar, type phishreports@lasalle.edu to send the headers to the Phishing Reports Mailbox.
]
- Click in the message window to get an insert cursor. Hold down the Ctrl key and press the letter V key to paste the header into the message window.
- Click on the Send button to send the header and original message to the Phishing Reports mailbox.
Forwarding Headers from Outlook Client
- Click on the three dots to right to view the drop-down list. Click on the Forward as Attachment command in the drop-down list.
- When you select Forward as Attachment, the Outlook client packages the original message along with its message headers as an Outlook item, opens a new email, and attaches the Outlook item to the new email.
- Enter phishreports@lasalle.edu in the To… address field of the new email to send the headers to the Phishing Reports mailbox. You may then add message text to include any details about the email, any reference information such a Help desk ticket number, or any questions you might have.
- When you have finished typing a message, click the Send button to send the message to the Phishing Reports mailbox.
