Leveraging Canvas’s Built-In Security Features for Quiz Integrity

What are they?

Detect Multiple Sessions and Filter IP Addresses are two security features in Canvas quizzes. Detect Multiple Sessions monitors if students attempt to access a quiz from more than one device or browser, alerting them when a new session is detected. Filter IP Addresses allows instructors to restrict quiz access to specific IP addresses or ranges, ensuring that only students in designated locations or networks can take the quiz. Together, these tools help instructors manage and control how quizzes are accessed.

Why are they important?

These features are important because they help maintain the integrity of online assessments. Detect Multiple Sessions discourages students from trying to circumvent quiz rules by switching devices or browsers mid-assessment, while Filter IP Addresses ensures that quizzes are taken in authorized locations, which can prevent unauthorized access. By using both tools, instructors can provide a more secure testing environment, protect academic standards, and give learners a fair and consistent assessment experience.
