Canvas: New Quizzes: Securing Assessments

Summary

Canvas New Quizzes offers two powerful settings to protect exam integrity. Detect Multiple Sessions (online) alerts students if they try to access a quiz from a different browser or device, discouraging login sharing and helping maintain fairness. Filter IP Addresses restricts quiz access to approved networks or devices—ideal for proctored or lab-based exams—reducing the risk of unauthorized participation. Both settings can be enabled from the quiz Settings menu when building or editing a quiz.

Strategies to Ensure Fair and Secure Testing

Detect Multiple Sessions for Online Assessments

What is it?

To monitor if students access the quiz from multiple devices or browsers. When this setting is enabled, students receive a notification if they attempt to continue a quiz in a different session from where they started.

Why is it important?

This setting is important because it discourages students from sharing login credentials or attempting to take the quiz on multiple devices, helping protect exam integrity.

How do I do it?

Turn on Detecting Multiple Sessions by toggling button to green.

After selecting Build (edit), select Settings in the top ribbon. From here, toggle on (green) "Detect Multiple Sessions".

Filter IP Addresses for In-Person Assessments

What is it?

This New Quizzes option lets instructors control which devices or locations can access a quiz by specifying allowed IP address ranges. Instructors can enter custom IP ranges or choose from pre-defined groups, helping ensure that only approved devices or networks can access the assessment.

Why is it important?

Using IP filtering helps maintain exam security by limiting quiz access to a controlled environment - such as a campus testing center or specific lab computers - reducing the risk of unauthorized access or remote collaboration during exams.

How do I do it?

After selecting Build to edit your quiz, select Settings from the top ribbon.

Turn on Filter IP Addresses by toggling button to green.

Next, toggle the Filter IP Addresses button to green [1]. From here, instructors can filter IP address by entering custom group ranges [2] or select from existing named group ranges [3]. For assistance, on choosing the appropriate IP addresses, reach out to the IT Helpdesk.
