What is a Smishing (SMS/Text) scam and how do I report them?

Body

What is a smish?

Smishing is a phishing attack that occurs over SMS or text messaging.

Example smish message

La  Salle University does NOT send text messages about email or account shutdowns. If you receive a text claiming your account will be suspended, asking you to click a link, or requesting a verification or MFA code — it is a scam.

  • Do not reply
  • Do not click links
  • Do not share passwords or multi-factor authentication (MFA) codes
  • Take a screenshot and report it to phishreports@lasalle.edu immediately
  • Block the number and report it as junk to your cell phone provider
