About
- This article contains steps for updating your password from the Microsoft 365 Account Homepage. You will need your current La Salle password. You may also be asked to approve sign-in using a text message code or the Microsoft Authenticator app.
Getting Started
- Navigate to the Microsoft 365 Account Homepage (https:\\myaccount.microsoft.com), enter your existing password and click Sign in.

2. Enter your existing password and click Sign in.

3. And approve the sign-in with the text message code or in the Microsoft Authenticator app.

4. Select Password from the left navigation panel or select Change password from the Password block.

5. Enter your new password in the "New password" box. Then retype the password in the "Confirm new password" box.
- PASSWORD MUST BE:
- at least be 14 characters long (ignore any prompts that suggest an 8 character minimum)
- contain at least 1 uppercase letter,
- contain at least 1 lowercase letter,
- contain at least 1 numeric digit, and
- contain at least 1 punctuation mark or symbol (excluding # and or - )
- Password cannot contain patterns or phrases often found in easily-guessed passwords:
- passwords containing banned fragments (e.g., 'NoSnowWinter2026'.)
- common names or dictionary words with number (e.g., 'Michael2014', or 'Football2026')
- keyboard patterns or character sequences (e.g., 'qwerty123' or 'ABCxyz123!')
- season and year patterns (e.g., 'Winter2025#' or 'Spring2026!)
- weak base words (e.g., 'Password', 'Secret2026", 'Welcome1!, 'Admin123', or 'LetMeln123')

6. Click Submit. If you do not see an error message, your password was changed.

Common Password Errors
- If your new password does not meet security requirements, Microsoft 365 will display an error message like the ones below.
- If you see 'Choose a password that is harder to guess', it generally indicates a pattern or phrase commonly found in easily-guessed passwords mention above.
- If you see 'Your password doesn't meet policy requirements', it generally means that the password is not at least 14 characters or does not contain a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numeric digits, and punctuation marks or symbols.

*****NOTE FOR LA SALLE-OWNED LAPTOP USERS*****
|
If you use a La Salle-owned Windows laptop and are working off campus, connecting through the VPN, or using campus Wi-Fi, you must continue to use your old password when you start-up your laptop until:
- You bring your laptop to campus.
- Attach your laptop to your docking station or to the wired (Ethernet) network (a Wi-Fi connection will not work).
- Start up or reboot your laptop and sign in to Windows. When you sign in, you must supply your new password. This will sync passwords.
If you are working on campus and are connected to your docking station or to the wired network when you change your password, you should reboot your laptop and sign in with your new password to sync passwords.

 |
La Salle-Owned Apple MacBook users will need to contact the IT Helpdesk to sync passwords.
