What is changing?
Some University computers are configured with temporary user profiles to provide a secure, consistent experience for all users. These computers are designed for shared use, meaning multiple students, faculty, and staff may use the same machine.
When you sign in, the computer creates a temporary workspace for you. This allows you to use University applications and complete your work, but files saved locally on the computer are not permanently stored.
What computers are affected?
The following University computers use temporary user profiles:
- Classroom computers
- Lab computers
- Library computers
These computers are shared resources intended for use by multiple students, faculty, and staff throughout the day.
Important: Save Your Files Before Signing Out
Any files saved only on the computer may be deleted when you:
- Sign out of the computer
- Restart the computer
- Shut down the computer
- The computer performs maintenance or updates
This includes files saved in locations such as:
- Downloads
- Desktop
- Documents
- Other folders stored directly on the computer
If you need to keep a file, you must save it somewhere else before leaving the computer.
Where should I save my files?
To prevent losing your work, save files to:
✅ OneDrive (recommended)
- Your University OneDrive provides secure cloud storage.
- Files saved to OneDrive will be available when you sign into another University computer.
✅ An external storage device
- USB flash drives or other approved external storage devices may be used for saving files.
What can I use on these computers?
You will still have access to University-provided applications and software needed for classes and work, including commonly used programs such as:
- Microsoft Office applications
- Web browsers
- Course-specific software
- Other applications provided by the University
Applications will function normally, but the computer settings and configuration are managed by the University.
Why are these computers configured this way?
Temporary profiles help the University:
- Keep shared computers secure
- Provide a consistent experience for all users
- Protect University systems and data
- Automatically maintain computers between users
What is restricted?
Because these are managed University computers:
- You may not have permission to install software
- Some system settings cannot be changed
- Security settings are managed centrally
- Personal customization may not persist after signing out
Before leaving the computer
Before you walk away:
☑ Save your work
☑ Upload important files to OneDrive or another storage location
☑ Close applications
☑ Sign out of your account
Remember: If a file is only saved locally on the computer, it may be permanently removed after you sign out or the computer restarts.
