Overview
Microsoft Excel includes several built-in add-ins that provide advanced functionality. Two of the most commonly used add-ins are:
- Solver Add-in: Used for optimization, forecasting, and what-if analysis.
- Analysis ToolPak: Provides advanced statistical and engineering analysis tools.
If these options are not available in Excel, they can be enabled through the Add-ins menu.
Prerequisites
- Microsoft Excel desktop application installed.
- User must have permission to modify Excel settings.
- Excel must be fully launched before beginning the process.
Enable Excel Add-ins
Step 1: Open Excel
Launch Microsoft Excel and open a blank workbook or an existing spreadsheet.

Step 2: Open Excel Options
- Select File in the upper-left corner of Excel.

- Scroll to the bottom of the left navigation pane.
- Click Options (This opens the Excel Options configuration window.)

Step 3: Navigate to Add-ins
Within the Excel Options window:
- Select Add-ins from the left-side menu.

Step 4: Open the Excel Add-Ins Manager
At the bottom of the Add-ins page:
- Locate the Manage dropdown menu.
- Verify Excel Add-ins is selected.
- Click Go...

Step 5: Enable Required Add-ins
In the Add-Ins window:
- Check Analysis ToolPak.
- Check Analysis ToolPak - VBA (recommended).
- Check Solver Add-in.

Note: Analysis ToolPak - VBA is optional for most users but is recommended for compatibility with some advanced Excel features and macros.
- Click OK.
Excel may take several seconds to load the selected add-ins.
Verify Installation
After clicking OK, return to the workbook.
- Select the Data tab on the ribbon.
- Look at the far right side of the toolbar.
You should now see:
within the Analysis section of the Data ribbon.

Expected Result
Once the add-ins are successfully enabled:

Users can immediately begin using advanced statistical analysis and optimization tools without restarting Excel.
Troubleshooting
Solver or Data Analysis Does Not Appear
- Return to File → Options → Add-ins.
- Verify the add-ins remain checked.
- Ensure Excel Add-ins is selected under the Manage dropdown.
- Close and reopen Excel - Check if the add-ins are now available.
- Follow Steps in this KB for: Troubleshooting Missing Solver and Data Analysis ToolPak in Excel.
- If the issue persists, run an Office repair:
- Control Panel → Programs and Features
- Microsoft 365 Apps
- Change
- Quick Repair
Add-ins Are Missing from the List
If Solver Add-in or Analysis ToolPak do not appear in the Add-ins window:
- Verify Microsoft Excel is fully installed.
- Ensure the Office installation is not using a limited feature set.
- Run an Office repair.
- Contact the Systems Administration team for further assistance.
Summary
To enable Solver and Data Analysis ToolPak in Excel:
File → Options → Add-ins → Manage: Excel Add-ins → Go → Check Analysis ToolPak, Analysis ToolPak - VBA, and Solver Add-in → OK
After enabling the add-ins, Solver and Data Analysis will appear under the Data tab in the Analysis section of the Excel ribbon. This provides access to advanced statistical, engineering, forecasting, and optimization tools directly within Excel.
