How to Prepare Your iPhone for Passkey Setup

About

iOS 17 or newer is required to use passkeys. iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and newer models support iOS 17. Older models, including iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, and 1st Generation SE, do not support iOS 17.

Please follow the instructions below to prepare your iPhone before continuing with the passkey setup.

How to Check Your Phone's iOS Version

  1. Go to Settings

     
  2. Press General

     
  3. Press About

     
  4. Check your phone's iOS Version



    If you cannot upgrade to iOS 17 or greater, you should contact the IT Helpdesk to discuss alternatives. 

How to check the Microsoft Authenticator Version

Microsoft Authenticator version 6.8.7 or newer is required to support passkeys on iPhone.

  1. Go to your Microsoft Authenticator App

     
  2. Press the Hamburger Menu (≡) in the top left

     
  3. Press Help

     
  4. Scroll down to About and check the version

     

How to update Microsoft Authenticator Version If less than 6.8.7

  1. Go to App Store

     
  2. Press Search (Magnifying Glass)

     
  3. Type in search bar "Microsoft Authenticator App"

     
  4. Press Update

     

Let's Configure The Authenticator Access to Passkeys

  1. Go to Settings

     
  2. Press General

     
  3. Scroll and Press AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys

     
  4. Verify that the sliders for AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys and Authenticator are turned on

     
  5. Your phone is now ready for passkey setup. Return to the How to Create a Microsoft Authenticator App MFA Passkey article and continue with the Complete Your Passkey Setup section.
