This guide provides step-by-step instructions for setting up a Microsoft Authenticator passkey. It includes device requirements, links to prepare your iPhone or Android phone, and the steps needed to create and use your passkey for passwordless sign-in.
Does Your Phone Support Passkeys?
Before setting up a passkey, make sure your phone is running a supported operating system and Microsoft Authenticator is installed and up to date.
iPhone
iOS 17 or newer is required to support passkeys. iOS 17+ is compatible with iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and newer models. iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, and 1st Generation SE do not support iOS 17. Before continuing with passkey setup, follow the Prepare Your iPhone for Passkey Setup instructions.
Android
Android 14 or newer is required to support passkeys. Supported devices include Samsung Galaxy S21 and newer models, as well as Google Pixel 4a (5G), Pixel 5, and newer models. Before continuing with passkey setup, follow the Prepare Your Android Phone for Passkey Setup instructions.
Complete Your Passkey Setup
- Open a web browser on a PC or laptop, not your phone
- Navigate to https://mysignins.microsoft.com
- Sign in with your La Salle username, password and authorize access with your phone's Authenticator app.
- You will see a welcome back page. Tap the drop down arrow next to My Account
- Tap on Security Info
- Tap on Add sign-in method
- Tap on Passkey in Microsoft Authenticator
- Tap Next
- You will see this pop-up. STOP HERE and head over to your PHONE
- Open your phone's Authenticator app and tap on the Right Arrow for your La Salle University account
- Wait for One-time password code timer to expire.
- Write down the new One-time password code as soon as it rolls over.
- Tap on Create a passkey in your Authenticator app.
- Tap Sign in
- IF the Authenticator prompts with "Are you trying to sign in?", tap Yes.
- IF you are prompted with "Approve a request on my Microsoft Authenticator app" or "Use a verification code", tap Use a verification code
- Type in the 6-digit code you wrote down in Step 12 and tap Verify.
- You will see Authenticator status update that reads "Verifying your identity" and/or "Creating passkey"
- You may be prompted to Scan your face, enter PIN or touch the haptic button to verify your identity.
- You will see an Authenticator status update that reads "Creating passkey"
- When you see "Passkey created", tap Done in the Authenticator app
- Now verify the Passcode in Microsoft's mysignins Portal. Go to your COMPUTER and tap Next
- You will see the computer mysignins status update "Verifying"
- Your Passkey is now created and verified. Tap Done
- Go back to the Security Info page and press change to update your Default Sign-in Method
- Set default method to App based authentication - notification
- IF you have Phone or Alternate Phone configured as sign-in method, you should delete it.
- Otherwise, you should be all set
What to Expect When Signing In After Passkey Setup
- Go to my.lasalle.edu
- When prompted to Sign in, type your La Salle email or select your La Salle email
- However, instead of supplying your password, click Use your face, fingerprint, PIN or security key instead
- Click Face, fingerprint, PIN or security key
- Click iPhone, iPad, or Android phone and sign in with your passkey
Note: Microsoft will remember your choice and use your passkey instead of your password for future sign-ins.
